Mary was born and raised in California's Central Valley, and as the oldest girl in an ethic Portuguese family that included eight siblings; there was not much time for anything but helping at home. The only thing that kept her in school was her art classes at Manteca High School. Of the art instructors at Manteca, two stand out, Dan Petersen and Ron Pecchenino.
As a mature adult, Mary returned to school at Modesto Junior College where Dan Petersen was again her instructor, along with Dr. Richard Serros, and Thomas Duchscher. In May of 2000 Mary graduated with honors from Modesto Junior College, and in the fall of 2002 also with honors from the University of California at Berkeley, with Bachelors of Arts Degrees in the Practice of Art and Art History. In the summer of 2006 Mary earned her Master of Arts in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA. Mary is currently Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Art, and past Art Gallery Director at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, CA.
Mary's works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, intaglio printing, and three dimensional sculpture, span themes from surreal beauty and abstract works filled with color, to statements about the world in which we all live.
"Color is important to me in a painting and I do appreciate a beautifully composed colorful work, for me sometimes color can work just for itself. However, that does not mean a good painting for me necessarily needs to be imbued with color, as long as it works on many other levels and keeps my attention."
Mary lives in Manteca, in California's Central Valley, with her husband Waldemar "Walt" Scheinuck, a local artist & photographer, their German Shepherds, Anker, & Yalena, their Longhaired Dachshund, Rowdy, their Main Coon Cat, Nick, and their Conure, Sergeant Bilko. Together they own and operate Hart Lane Studio & Gallery in Manteca, California.
"As an art historian and fine artist, I find that making art is the more difficult of the two. It is a gut wrenching, heart rending, mind-boggling, soul searching way of living. Artists have a burning passion that can never be satisfied, although it can be kept in check by constantly creating. It is a risky business baring your soul for the world to devour."
