Course average is shown for undergraduate courses with a size of 12 or more and is expressed as a letter grade corresponding to the refined letter grade scale. The symbol “*” is used to indicate an undergraduate course with fewer than 12 students. A “blank” is used to indicate that a course average has not been calculated.

Credit/Non-Credit (CR/NCR) is an approved grading scale at the University of Toronto.  Generally, CR/NCR grades are not factored into the GPA calculation. Where NCR is used in the GPA calculation, the symbol “NC%” is used on the transcript and a grade point value of 0.0 is assigned.

In a few cases, all students in a course will be graded in this manner. More often, this grading scale is an option that may be selected by students in some University divisions: the Faculty of Arts and Science; the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design; the University of Toronto Scarborough; and the University of Toronto Mississauga. Normally, students in these divisions may choose up to 2.0 full course equivalents in the course of their degree to be graded in this manner.

In March, 2015, the University was affected by a labour disruption. In some courses the syllabus was changed to re-weight course work and exams.  As an accommodation in that academic year, some students were graded on the CR/NCR grading scale instead of receiving a letter or numeric grade. As a consequence, some students may have received more than the normal maximum of 2.0 FCE’s graded on the CR/NCR basis during the 2014/2015 academic year. There may also be students in other academic divisions who received this grade because they were taking an affected course in one of the named divisions.

In 2020, the University of Toronto was affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic.  In-person courses were partially replaced with alternative delivery methods and some students received grades based on the CR/NCR grading scale instead of receiving a letter or numeric grade.

The GPA Calculator is readily available to U of T students and can be used to estimate sessional, cumulative and annual GPAs. The application also recommends resources, including academic advising, writing centres, workshops and career advising.

FAQs

What grading scale do most colleges use? ›

What is a GPA? Your grade point average (GPA) is the sum of all your course grades throughout your high school career divided by the total number of credits. Most high schools (and colleges) report grades on a 4.0 scale.

What is a notation on a transcript? ›

Annotations to the transcript should: Reflect academic work only. Acknowledge academic work / achievement that is in addition to that required by the student's program of study. Recognize work that conforms to an agreed upon minimum commitment of time, effort, and performance.

Is 64 a failing grade? ›

You'll usually need to receive a letter grade between A and D to pass a class, often the numerical equivalent of 65 percent or higher. Receiving an F—which stands for “fail”—indicates that you did not pass the class. The cutoff to receive an F is usually 64 percent.

Is a 3.3 GPA good in university? ›

A 3.3 GPA is a strong GPA, falling within the range of the top 25-30% of students. But it may not guarantee admission to highly selective colleges. Admissions committees consider many factors when making their decisions, including GPA, test scores, extracurricular activities, recommendations, and essays.

Is 3.7 a good GPA? ›

A 3.7 GPA is a Grade Point Average of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. It indicates that you've earned a predominantly A- average in your courses. A 3.7 GPA is considered to be a very good GPA and is often an indicator of strong academic performance.

What is an A vs A+ on transcript? ›

Traditionally, the grades are A+, A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C−, D+, D, D− and F, with A+ being the highest and F being lowest. In some cases, grades can also be numerical. Numeric-to-letter-grade conversions generally vary from system to system and between disciplines and status.

What does Z mean on a transcript? ›

The letter Z is used to indicate that a grade was not properly received and/or recorded for a course. Note: No grade points are allowed for grades F, I, NP, P, PR, NPR, W, or Z. A complete record of all previously used grades and grading systems is detailed on the official transcript. Grade.

What format should transcripts be in? ›

The most common file types used for transcription are . txt (Plain Text), . doc (Microsoft Word), and . pdf (Adobe PDF).

Is D passing in college? ›

Is B a good grade in university? ›

A+, A, A- indicates excellent performance. B+, B, B- indicates good performance. C+, C, C- indicates satisfactory performance. D+, D, D- indicates less than satisfactory performance.

What is a pass in university? ›

Does a C+ look bad on a transcript? ›

One C on an otherwise strong transcript may not be as detrimental as you think. While it's true that top-tier colleges are looking for strong academic records, they also consider other factors like your extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation.

How do you explain bad grades on a transcript? ›

We recommend addressing the 'bad' semester directly, in whatever detail you feel comfortable with. Life happens to everyone, and the faculty reviewers understand that grades can suffer when you experience a trauma. Sometimes, that's an extended illness, the death of a loved one, or a bad breakup.

Do colleges care about B? ›

Colleges look at your entire academic profile, including your GPA, course rigor, and overall performance in the context of your school. One B in the grand scheme of things isn't a significant setback, especially if you have consistently good grades in your other courses.

Do colleges use a 4.0 or 5.0 scale? ›

The most common GPA structure is the 4.0 scale, in which an A equals 4.0 and an F equals 0.0. Some schools use a variation of that but amend it with a weighted scale that includes added credit for Advanced Placement or honors courses.
